Students! This is how it works:

  • You must fill out the form below and submit all required documents in order to be considered for this scholarship.
  • Please provide your education history by including details of your academic background, such as schools attended, degrees earned, majors or areas of study, and any relevant educational achievements.

2023 – Essay Competition

Who is eligible to participate in the competition? California residents & must be a natural born Lebanese citizen or a direct descendant of one (i.e. parents or grandparents)

There are three divisions: 
Division 1 – Junior and Senior high school students as well as 1st year college students
Division 2 – 2nd year college students through 1st year graduate students
Division 3 – Currently in graduate school or obtained a degree and are young professionals

What are the prizes?
1st Place from each division will receive a $1,000 check
2nd Place from each division will receive a $500 check

Who are the judges?
Professors and Educators

Where will you receive the award?
All winners will be required to attend the WLCU event in order to receive the scholarship (date to be determined)

What are the essay requirements?
The essay will be on ONE topic of your choice
The essay is to be 4 to 5 pages in length not including title page
Follow APA style guidelines

What are the essay topics?
Topic 1 – Describe one major problem occurring in our beloved Lebanon. Examples: poverty, depression, unemployment, salaries, relationships, infrastructures, traffic, transportation or education.

Consider: History of the issue, why its important and potential solutions. 

Topic 2 –  Most inspirational person in your life. Examples: family member, mentor, historical figure, book character, modern celebrities etc. 

Consider: How your inspirational person has values and behaviors that inspire you. How has this person influenced you and helped foster your personal growth. Share meaningful lessons you have learned and would like to pass onto future generations. 

Bonus Points: Gibran Kahlil Gibran
Extra points will be awarded if you include one additional page on this topic in your essay. 

Consider: How did he influence Lebanon? How did he help bring about global culture of unity and peace as well as equality of men and women? How did he influence you and your morals and standards as a Lebanese individual?

What is the deadline? July 31st, 2023

All submissions must be made via essay form above. 

Please also include your answers to the following questions in your submission:

Are you willing to be a part of a group discussing the prompt you chose?
If yes would you prefer to meet via zoom or in person?
Would you be interested in being a part of the group discussion on the prompt you did not choose?
Would you like to be a part of the WLCU/youth group and attend more events in the future?
Would you like to be added to our mailing list to receive future updates about upcoming WLCU events?
